HE'S GOT YOU COVERED
SERMON STARTER

Sundown last Tuesday to sundown Wednesday Jewish households in the U.S. observed Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It's the day of atonement after the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah. On this day, Jews ask God for forgiveness for their sins to secure their fate. ... At the end of the services, a shofar or ram's horn is blown to signal the end of Yom Kippur.

In ancient Israel the High Priest went into the the Holy of Holies in the Temple on Yom Kippur. He carried live coals from the altar and sacred incense. The High Priest also carried a bowl filled with the blood of a bull to cover his own sins. A sheep and a goat were offered for the sins of the people. If their sins were forgiven for that year as the High Priest put incense on the live coals a steam of smoke arose and in that cloud a irredescent brightness like the sun appeared. It was the Shenikah Glory Presence of the Lord.

"Every Jewish holiday or feast day points to a new and different kind of covenant God was making with mankind. At first man was covered by animal blood. Later, the Blood of God's Lamb covered mankind's sin: past, present and future forever. Jesus has us under his covering. He's got you covered."

ATONEMENT = כִּפֻּרִים‎ = kip-poor' = A Cleansing - A Covering

26 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
27 "Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. 28 And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. Leviticus 23:26-28 (NKJV)

                    2. I submit the Lord Himself made the first animal sacrifice
                    3. Killed a "Lamb without blemish" and covered them
                    4. Their son, Abel was a herdsman and a shepherd
                    5. A Lamb was God's approved sacrifice evoking Cain's                                           jealousy and Abel's murder
                    6. God probably covered Adam and Eve with the skin of lambs

Second Time in Scripture God used Blood to Cover Sins:
II. ISRAEL WAS COVERED LEAVING EGYPT - EX. 12:6-7
6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.
7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

          A. The Blood of a Lamb was struck on the 2 doorposts of houses
                    1. The Death of the First Born was the 10th Plague - Ex. 12:13
                    2. The Angel of Death "Passed Over" Houses w/lamb's blood
13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you                                 are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague
shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
          B. Pre-Figures the Death of those who die knowing Jesus as Savior

passed from death into life.    John 5:24
                    1. Knowing Jesus as Savior and following Him grants us life
                    2. Our own Angel of Death will pass over us and take us home

Third Time in Scripture God used Blood to Cover Sins:
III. ABRAHAM WAS COVERED BY A RAM - Text
7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"
8 And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So the two of them went together.
9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

Fourth and Final Time in Scripture God used Blood to Cover Sins:
IV. JESUS WAS THE FINAL COVERING - Heb. 10:11-13
11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, (Jesus) after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.
          A. The Blood Jesus shed on His Cross was the last Blood Offering
                    1. Note that all Four were Lambs (Young Sheep)
                    2. The Fourth was God's Lamb
                    3. God's Lamb was willingly, voluntarily slain for all sin
          B. Annual Animal sacrifice for the sin of mankind ended at the Cross
            Hebrews 10:3-4; 10:11,12
3 But in those (animal) sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the             same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, (Jesus)             after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right             hand of God,     Hebrews 10:11-12
                    1. No more animal sacrifices for God's favor
                    2. No more Blood of Bulls, Goats, Lambs, Pigeons for                                              Covering Sin
          C. Jesus has got you Covered, or your Coverings - Romans 10:8-10
8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with
your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised
Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes
unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
                    1. Once you've received Him into your heart your sins are                                       covered / atoned
                    2. When you lay down at night. . .He's got you covered
                    3. In Times of Danger. . .He's got you covered
                    4. Literally, Ruth was Covered by Boaz' Garment, by this                                         he was offering his love, his house, his provision, his                                    protection, his life
                    5. Through Jesus' Life, His Death, His Triumph over death. . .
                              He's got you covered!
                    6. We can walk in courage for Yom Kippur is our reminder. . .
                    7. We can walk without fear, Living or Dying. . .
                              He's got you covered!

HE'S GOT YOU COVERED
Genesis 22:1-14
1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
2 Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you."
6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.
10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" So he said, "Here I am."
12 And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided."

Yom Kippur means The Day of Atonement, or The Day of Covering. But it’s also called Yom Ha Kippurim - The Day of the Coverings. God’s covering is so great that the singular word covering cannot quite cover it. Messiah is the fulfillment of Yom Ha Kippurim - Messiah is our covering - or rather our coverings. If you’ve received Him, every one of your sins is covered. But it means more. When someone’s watching over you, they say, “I’ve got you covered.” Well, He’s got you covered. When you lay down at night, you can sleep securely because “He’s got you covered.” When you’re in danger and you need someone to protect you, “He’s got you covered.” In ancient times when a man offered a woman his love, his house, his protection, his life, he would spread His cloak over her. In that way too, “He’s got you covered.” So celebrate Messiah’s Coverings. Walk in courage, and without fear because the Day of Atonement is really Yom Ha Kippurim - the Day of the Coverings. And if you don’t remember that - just remember “He’s got you Covered.”
