THE PROMISE OF THE FATHER
SERMON STARTER

A young man came to our Penn-Ohio Prayer meeting one Wednesday morning. His face shone with God’s peace.  I told him, “I don’t recognize your name, but I know your spirit.”

He had obviously been touched by God, and his countenance showed it. When you experience the Promise of the Father your face will show it and your life will reveal it.

When I was 29 years of age and assessed my life, I decided that I was broken in body and broken in spirit. I decided at that time to seek the Lord and see if His Promises that were theoretical at that time in my life. . .were true. My 22 month  journey of seeking God with my whole heart ended with a life changing encounter with the Father's Promise.

During that 22 months I attended a number of Pentecostal church services. I was like a little kid pressing his nose against the glass outside a candy store. I knew something was happening in Pentecostal circles was for real, and I wanted it in my life.

However, I had been influenced as a young person that Pentecostals were Holy Rollers. They were a Christian sect that were caught up in emotionalism and unusual activities under the influence of the Holy Spirit.      That prospect frightened me, but I was still drawn to them. They held a key to what I needed if I could just get past their zany behavior.

What has Jesus promised to His Church? Has He promised health, wealth, influence, success, power and security? He has promised He will be with us and we will walk in His peace. How does this promise come to us and what is the evidence of His Presence? My sermon this morning explores the Biblical Promise of the Father and what it means to us today.

THE PROMISE OF THE FATHER

ILLUSTRATION

June Silber, the wife of one of my Bible School friends, told the story of her little 4 year old son whom she was tucking into his bed one night. The little boy told his mommy he wanted to sing her a little song. It was a cute little song about Jesus, and had a catchy melody. June asker her son where he got the song. He said, "Jesus taught me the song."

June thought about it and tucked it into her mom-memory and didn't think of it again until something unusual happened. One of her friends invited her to a Women's Aglow meeting. Although she was Lutheran, curious about it, she went.

Early in the meeting there was worship and singing in the Spirit. One lady stood up and began to sing in the Spirit. June was dumbfounded. It was the same words and the same song her little son sang the previous week.

June began to be emotional and her tears flowed. At that moment she experienced the Presence of Jesus in a way she had never known before. Like Job of old at the conclusion of his experience with God, exclaimed in Job 42:5,

5 "I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You.

June experienced The Promise of the Father.

My question is, "Have you?"
