DIALOGUE:

Major Buxton: York, What do you suppose (Daniel) Boone was looking for when he went out into the (Tennessee) wilderness?

Alvin: Well, I never thought much on it.

Major Buxton: Was he looking for new lands?

Alvin: Might be.

Major Buxton: Maybe, maybe for something more, something that a man just can't see with his eyes, or hold in his hands. Something that some men don't even know they have until they've lost it.

Alvin: Yes, sir?

Major Buxton: To be free. Now that's quite a word, "Freedom" — I think that's what he wanted. I think that's what sent Boone into your Tennessee country.

Alvin: That… that what this here book's about? (Holds up a U.S. History book)

Major Buxton: Yep. That's the story of a whole people's struggle for freedom, from the very beginning until now — for we're still struggling. It's quite a story York, how they all got together and set up a government, whereby all men were pledged to defend the rights of each man, and each man to defend the the rights of all men. We call that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

This morning's passage of scripture and sermon explores the Bible's teaching on the Christian believer's constant struggle against this world, the flesh, the devil and the works of those who walk in darkness.

Our present (worldly) culture has chosen the devil's easy downhill path of sin that is taking away our most valued freedom of choice.

The Bible is clear in its admonitions to obey God and choose righteousness.        Pastor Phil  <><<

THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM

Galatians 5:16-23

"It seems that in our country, individual freedom is frowned upon. It isn't "politically correct" to be an advocate for individualism that allows the freedom to chose traditional values and lifestyles. The Bible is clear in its admonitions to obey God and choose righteousness. There will always be a struggle for freedom"  Pastor Phil  <><<

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.    2 Corinthians 3:17

“If the Son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:36

FLESH = "Limited only to a physical body and the physical strength it contains"  Eg. Self-Righteousness, Pharisees. . .

SPIRIT = The part of a believer that cleaves to the Lord and longs to be like Him.

THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM

Galatians 5:16-23
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

DAVIS WILKERSON'S TESTIMONY

Twenty-two years ago I went to the slums of New York City to work with drug addicts. The greatest scientific and religious minds of that time were saying that drug addicts could not be cured. The then governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller, had just completed a two-year, multi-million dollar research program with not a single positive result. In one medical gathering after another, I heard "experts" say, "There is no known cure for a drug addict. He is psychologically and physiologically hooked. The best we can do is offer methadone as a substitute drug."

I set up business for God in an old, run-down mansion in Brooklyn. Yet, I had that nagging thought deep in me, "Maybe they can't be cured. Maybe there are drug-prone personalities destined to live as slaves to drugs."

Every drug addict who walked through our doors parroted the line of the experts. Over and again they argued, "I'm hopeless. I can't help myself. Once a junkie, always a junkie. I was born to end up with this monkey on my back."

What a lie of the devil that was. God helped us to expose it with a documented 85 percent cure rate, and today thousands of drug addicts and alcoholics have been completely delivered from their slavery. Most do not even have the faintest desire for the very thing that once enslaved them.

David was the Author of "The Cross and the Switchblade,"  and founder of Teen Challenge. He wrote this testimony in the 1985. David was killed in a car crash in 2011.
