JESUS: The Power of the name
Examples of the Power of the Name
Last Thursday evening at my CARE groups in Hubbard I finished an hour of teaching when someone brought up the subject of addiction and shame. I gave my testimony of how shame in my early adolescent life and adult life kept me emotionally bottled up. Discovering a practical side to the First three steps of the 12-Steps of Recovery, I ended my lead with, "Jesus Christ is my Higher Power." Two new visiting women in the group reacted strongly. One lady actually acted like I'd struck her.
One of my pastor facilitators told me afterwards, the lady I mentioned had been to New Age Healing Conferences. If I was ever unsure about the Power of Jesus' Name what happened Thursday night affirmed it.

22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son.   1 John 2:22 (NIV)
Second Example
A Messianic pastor once gave me his email address. I sent him my regular inspirational pieces and sermons from time to time. One day I opened an email that was in capital letters, “Stop sending me your information about your Greek Jesus! I hate that name!” I was taken aback, but sent him an inquiry as to what he meant. He said, “There is only the name ‘Yashua.' Your Jesus is a Greek fabrication. I don’t believe in him!”
The man was obviously hung up on semantics, that is, word definitions that are stipulated through their use. Language changes with culture and time. For example, the actual Greek pronunciation for Jesus is “Hey-souse.” With English pronunciations we Anglicize Greek, Latino and Hebrew words starting with “h” sounds by adding the consonant “j.” Hence, “Hey-sous” becomes "Je-sus."
We must not allow semantics and word definitions keep us from using the name of Jesus. His name has power. This sermon explores the supernatural power of His name uttered by those

lives that are totally committed to him, who know Him and love Him.
What was your nick name when you were growing up? That name influences and sometimes colors the way you look at life. Remember Johnny Cash’s famous song, “A Boy Named Sue?”  (Ask the audience to share some of their names.)
In 1990 I heard the screech of automobile tires and looked into my rear view mirror just in time to see an ancient Oldsmobile sliding toward me. The resulting crash made an “accordion” out of my Celebrity and knocked me cold. When I came to there was only one name on my lips, “Jesus. . .Jesus. . .Jesus. . .”
No name on earth has meant so much to me. . .

JESUS: The Power of the name
Philippians 2:9-11

“A name has great power to influence the shape and direction of our lives. We grow to accept of the names that are assigned to us. Our name becomes us. What name are you drawn to? What name gives you direction?”         Pastor Phil  <><<

9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.       Philippians 2:9-11 (NKJV)

Isaiah 9:6
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and His Name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Matthew 1:18-25, esp. v. 21 - "And she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His Name Jesus: for He shall save His People from their sins."

There are several ways the Name of Jesus  shows His Power:
            A. POWER TO CONVICT – John 14:7,8
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for                    if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will
send Him to you. “And when He has come, He will convict the world of
sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”
1. It's impossible to fix a person unless they're broken
                    2. There can be no meaningful change without self-conviction
          B. POWER TO ACT – Jeremiah 33:3 (God’s phone number)
“'Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things,
  which you do not know.'”
1. Call on Him by His Name in times of pressure / conflict
                    2. Consider a mother when called upon by a distressed child

Another way the Name of Jesus  shows His Power:
            A. Life Changing Power - Acts 4:12
"This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become
the chief cornerstone.'  "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no
other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
1. Eg. Oldest girl chronic fevers. . .I put my hand on her head                            and cursed the fever in the Name of Jesus! Her fever broke                           and she never had it again!

2. Jesus changed water to wine -
                    3. He changed the widow's mourning at Nain to rejoicing
                    4. He changed the darkness of the Blind man to sight
                    5. He changed the skin of a Leper to clear and beautiful
                    6. He changed the restricted world of the lame to walking
                    7. His Name has the great Power of Change
                              a. He changed my wounded heart for a whole one
                              b. He changed my worthless life for one of great value
          B. His Name has the Power of the New Creation -  2  Corinthians. 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
1. Have you ever walked in the darkness of depression?
                    2. His Presence turns the night into day
                    3. He did it for me in a single early morning

The Third Way the Name of Jesus  shows His Power:
A. Abiding in Him Restores - John 15:7; Psalm 23:3
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” -  “He restores my soul. . .”
1. Ask any recovering substance abuser
          2. The name of Jesus invoked properly. . .
                    a. Restores clarity to the mind
                        b. Restores money to the bank account
                        c. Restores self-respect
                        d. Restores self-esteem to families
                        e. Restores failed marriages
          B. Ask Anything in His Name - John 14:14
"If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
1. Almost a blank check
                    2. Within the limits of ethics and morality
                    3. End your prayers, "We pray in Jesus' Name. . ."
C. Whatsoever You Shall Ask - John 16:23b; 24
“In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my
Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not
asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will
              be complete.”
1. Not necessary to implore. . .beg. . .anguish. . .
                    2. If you walk in Him and you do what He commanded you
                    3. It's His pleasure to grant your requests made in faith

The Fourth Way the Name of Jesus  shows His Power:
            A. All Physical and Spiritual Forces Must Submit to Him - Phil. 2:9-11
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which
is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and

that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
              God the Father.”
1. Demons Tremble at the utterance of His Name
Eg. After the incident with my oldest girl, I went to sleep. At 3 am something astounding happened. It felt like a basketball smacked me in the face. I was wide awake. A wraith-like entity was at the foot of my bed. For a moment I was paralyzed. I couldn't speak at first. The grip that held me released itself and I shouted, "Jesus!"
The darkness lifted instantly. I awakened Lois calling out, "Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!"
2.  Darkness Turns to Light in your soul
3. You and I have no concept of the Power of His Name
9 But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have                                   entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for             those who love Him."   1 Corinthians 2:9
B. We are the Assignment of Angels - Psalm 91:11-16
“For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.  "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.  With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation."
          1. You have a Guardian Angel that resembles you- Acts 12:14,15
14 When she recognized Peter's voice, because of her gladness she                             did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter stood                                 before the gate.  15 But they said to her, "You are beside yourself!"
Yet she kept insisting that it was so. So they said, "It is his angel."
                    2. They are vigilant night and day protecting you

The Fifth Way the Name of Jesus  shows His Power:
            A. Whosoever Shall Call Upon The Name - Romans 10:13
“For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."
                    1. Repent of your sins. . .Renounce them. . .
                    2. Invite Him to enter your heart
          B. If You Will Confess With Your Mouth - Romans 10:8-10
“But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach):that if you confess with
your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised
Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto
righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Romans 1:16-17 (NKJV)
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."
