Three Kinds of Revival:

I have personally experienced genuine revival in each of three contexts. They are. . .
1. Personal, revival within one's own soul  (1971)
2. Local revival within a local context (Summer, 1971)
3. National revival that sweeps through a whole country (68-75)
My experience of revival on the personal context occurred the Summer of 1971. I was suffering from chronic stabbing pain from not one but two herniated discs in L-4 and L-5. The pain was so intense that it drove me into an episode of Major Depressive Disorder. Simply put, the Charlie-horse type back spasms caused me to no longer wish to live.
My pastor asked me if I would serve as a camp counselor at a Baptist Youth Camp in Arrow-Bear, high in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. I reluctantly agreed and made arrangements to attend.
Upon arriving I discovered that I was the only male attending except for my pastor who was camp cook. I became camp director by default. The problem was that I couldn't love anyone, especially myself. My personal pain was so intense I didn't love me. How was I to love, even with Jesus' love, 110 Junior age (9-12) children?
The first night I went to bed praying earnestly to God for help. I was extremely angry with God for allowing me to suffer suck agony, but I was desperate. As I drifted off to sleep I prayed dangerously, "God do you love me?" and, "God, will you show me?" Just as sleep came I saw this huge book opened half-way. The first half was filled in and the second half was empty.
Suddenly, I awakened hearing someone sobbing from their gut in the open barracks-type room. I was on a top bunk. I felt my face. The tears were mine. God showed me in a dream / vision His love for one of the troubled kids in the camp. It was like the father's love I felt for my two little girls, 2 and 4, only ten times as intense.
What happened next was like this intense soul-burning love began to pour into my wounded heart. It was so intense I asked God to lift it: I couldn't breathe. It would lift for a moment and then descend again. I could feel the bitterness over my father's death seventeen years before. . .melting away. I'd vowed not to shed tears so intense was my anger over the injustice. Wave after wave of this incredible love swept over me as my tears continued to flow for more than three hours.
Personal Revival happened in those early hours of the morning that changed my heart, my countenance and temporarily lifted the searing pain from my body. My life that followed has never been the same. That was forty-seven years ago. I experienced a Holy Spirit Revival that led to a deeper love for and commitment to Jesus.

Revive US AGAIN
SERMON STARTER
Thursday night I visited the NE Ohio Correctional Facility in Hubbard, Ohio. Prisoners were attending a mandatory AA meeting, and I was the featured speaker. They were excellent listeners and I held their attention for more than 40 minutes as I spoke about what it was like to be the adult child of a binging alcoholic. These men who gave me undivided attention needed salvation and reviving. I was revived as I spoke with them and answered their questions.
I was refreshed and exhausted at the same time. While I was there I didn't just see prisoners. I saw broken people with shattered lives. Driving home it occurred to me how we have lost our hearts for what really made us great as a people and a great nation. We need God to restore what we have lost in the past several decades.
When is personal, national revival needed?
When our hearts have grown cold toward God.
When our hearts are not moved by the world's suffering.
When we rely on stuff and things to lift our mood.
When we are worn out from serving Him.
When we are resistant to any change.
When we are satisfied with the status quo.
When we believe someone else is the problem.
When we hide secret sins from others, ourselves and God.
When we harbor bitterness and unforgiveness.
When we harbor animosity toward other believers.
When we relapse into old ways of thinking and acting.
Our hearts are sore in need of the reviving power of the Holy Spirit. We have become like John's rebuke to the Laodicean church of Revelation 3:15,
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
My sermon this morning is about being revived and revival.         Pastor Phil  <><<

Revive US AGAIN
Psalm 85:1-13

"There can NEVER be revival without tears. Revival is prefaced by repentance and deep contrition. Revival is prefaced by soul-searching, agonizing sorrow over the emptiness of sin. Tears are irresistible. Revival is a heart hunger for more and more of Jesus."                       Pastor Phil  <><<

Tears are not the evidence of revival; they are the result of revival.

REVIVE US AGAIN, Text:
Psalm 85:1-13
1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Lord, You have been favorable to Your land; You have brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2 You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all their sin. Selah
3 You have taken away all Your wrath; You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.
4 Restore us, O God of our salvation, And cause Your anger toward us to cease.
5 Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
6 Will You not revive us again, That Your people may rejoice in You?
7 Show us Your mercy, LORD, And grant us Your salvation.
8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly.
9 Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth, And righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yes, the LORD will give what is good; And our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before Him, And shall make His footsteps our pathway.
