SERMON STARTER
The Power of Forgiveness

The true Power of Forgiveness lies in knowing the nature of God as revealed in Jesus Christ.  Forgiveness looses God’s power in and through you to others. It only happens in an atmosphere of love.
Alice was a member of my Winter Grief Support Group twelve years ago at Kelley-Robb Funeral Home. She attended my group to aid her in the loss of her husband last November. This is a special grief support group that has several members who have lost a child. At one session Alice shared her grief story with the group concerning the loss of her 22 year-old daughter some 32 years before. Her daughter had just completed her nursing degree. She was married to a young man who lived to “party.” He was in his early 20’s and already displaying signs of severe alcoholism.
The young alcoholic husband was driving under the influence of alcohol and apprehended by police. The officer took him to the Youngstown jail to sober up. The young drunk had a big mouth. He bragged about the naivety of his young wife. A predatory inmate heard the boasts. He was a true criminal and took advantage of the information.
When the predator was released from jail he called Alice’ daughter and told her that he and her alcoholic husband were in a restaurant and wanted her to pick him up. She believed the liar and immediately came to the restaurant. The “animal” then lied again that her husband was in the men’s room. He’d go get her husband if she would start up the car and wait at the back of the restaurant. From there it was easy for the deceiver to force himself into her car and drive her away to her death.
It was over a week before authorities found the young woman’s strangled body. The murderer stole her ID and picked up another woman on his way to the Canadian border. He was apprehended when he tried to use the murdered woman’s stolen credit card. Ironically, he was never tried for the crime. He was incarcerated for 25 years on other charges and eventually died a painful cancer death while in prison.

ALICE Story, p. 2

Alice was inconsolable in her grief. She underwent two years of psychiatric ECT. (Electro-Convulsive Therapy, “Shock Treatments”) She still had no desire to live. She told the group, “I simply had to FORGIVE HIM. I had to do it for myself in order to be able to grieve the loss of my daughter. My personal trauma and pain was so severe I couldn’t cry. I HAD to forgive him so I could grieve my daughter’s death!”
This type of forgiveness is a process, but eventually she forgave both her 22 year-old daughter’s murderer and the alcoholic husband who betrayed her to the murderer.
When I heard Alice' grief story she showed no emotional trauma from the events of her deceased daughter's life. It was remarkable what forgiveness did for her. It is the Power of Forgiveness through the love of Jesus that made it possible for Alice to continue to live out her life in a measure of peace.

LESSONS LEARNED:
1. All unresolved grief is cumulative. If you do not resolve past injustices through forgiveness and acceptance, your next crisis will find you with an increasing inability to release and resolve the pent-up feelings of sorrow and loss. Eg. The snowball of unresolved grief at the top of the mountain will bury you in the avalanche at the bottom.
2. Bitterness and hardness of heart through un-forgiveness cannot be resolved through psychiatric treatment.
3. Only Jesus heals the broken-hearted. Only through His love can we find forgiveness, healing and peace.

The Power of Forgiveness
LEVITICUS 19:15-18 / PSALM 19:7-10

"The Power of Forgiveness transforms anger and hurt into healing and peace. Forgiveness can help you overcome feelings of depression, anxiety, and rage, as well as personal and relational conflicts. It is about making the conscious decision to let go of a grudge. Only Jesus' love can enable you to do that. THE ROYAL LAW - Matthew 22:37-40
“Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'   All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR? / EIGHT COMMANDS:
I.  DO NOT HONOR JUST THE RICH - v. 15a
15 'You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

          A. God loves all of mankind: the poor and the wealthy
                    1. All need a Savior to save them from their sins
                    2. We are all lost without Jesus
          B. We must not make a distinction between the wealthy and the poor
1 My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of
glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your assembly a man
with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man
in filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine
clothes and say to him, "You sit here in a good place," and say to the poor
man, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my footstool," 4 have you not
shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil
              thoughts?   James 2:1-4
                    1. Eg. Elder at my last church sneered at a new family,
"They smell bad and they don't help us with the mortgage payment!"
                    2. Partiality in judgment is a luxury the church cannot afford

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR?
II. JUDGE YOUR NEIGHBOR FAIRLY - Lev. 19:15b
15 'You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

          A. Pass judgment fairly and objectively - James 2:8,9
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love
your neighbor as yourself," you do well; 9 but if you show partiality, you
THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS, cont. p.2

commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
                    1. God's Righteous Justice is not arbitrary - Eg. Irritable judge
                    2. His Righteous Justice is not by whim or caprice
          B. Social Injustice is one of the most pressing conflicts of our time
                    1. Eg. NFL National Anthem Kneelers
                    2. How can players w/a yearly income of millions be victims?
          C. Righteous Justice is reflected in fairness to others
          D. Simply put, Injustice is denying a neighbor their rights under God
                    1. Injustice is treating a neighbor wrongly in God’s Eyes
                    2. Injustice is present in all cultures throughout the ages
          E. Only with Jesus in your life can you judge w/ righteousness

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR?
III. DO NOT BEAR TALES - v. 16a
16 You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.

A. Talebearers can destroy a person's reputation - Prov. 11:13
13 A talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is of a faithful spirit
               conceals a matter.
                    1. Bible also calls talebearers, "whisperers"
                    2. Eg. Amazing Grace - Loved a juicy bit of gossip
          B. Talebearers promote Third-Party communication - Prov. 20:19
19 He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not                            associate with one who flatters with his lips.

                    1. Do not associate yourself with one who is a known gossip

                    2. When someone starts to gossip — change the subject

                    3. If you are not part of the problem or part of the solution, stay                         out of it

                    4. If you have fallen into the bad habit of gossiping — ask God                         to change your heart

                    5. When you have been the victim of gossip — pray for and                               confront the parties that spread the rumor when God directs

          C. Socrates' Triple Filter Test - In ancient Greece, four centuries                        before Jesus, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high
esteem. Here is his Triple Filter for Truth
                    1. TRUTH – Are you absolutely sure the material presented is                          the truth?
                    2. GOODNESS – Is the material about something good for all                           concerned?
                    3. USEFULNESS – Is the data useful for those listening?
          D. Why talk at all if the material is neither true, nor good, nor useful?

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR?
IV. DO NOT ENDANGER/HARM YOUR NEIGHBOR’S LIFE - 16:b
16 You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.
THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS, cont. p.3

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR?
V.  DO NOT HATE YOUR BROTHER IN YOUR HEART - v. 17
17 'You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

A. Look at your brother's heart and see what God sees - 1 Sam. 16:7b
                    7 But the LORD said to Samuel. . .For the Lord does not see as man sees;
for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
B. The Hebrew word for "hate" is seeing your brother as your enemy
          C. See your brother through God's eyes of love and mercy

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR?
VI. DO NOT SEEK REVENGE - v. 18
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
            A. Stop rehearsing revenge in your heart and mind - Proverbs 20:22

22 Do not say, "I will recompense evil"; Wait for the LORD, and He will save you.
                    1. God's Job is to do vengeance / Don't do His job for Him
                    2. Marcus Aurelius Quote:
"The best revenge is to NOT be like your enemy."
B. Do good for your enemy - Proverbs 25:21-22 - Romans 12:21

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give
him water to drink; 22 For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And
               the LORD will reward you.
Romans 12:21 - 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

HOW CAN I LOVE MY NEIGHBOR?
VII.  DO NOT CARRY GRUDGES - v. 18b
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
          A. Stop the Instant Replay of Rehearsing Injustice - James 5:9
“Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned.
Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!”
          B.  Put an end to Holding Grudges
                1. Revenging – “I don’t get mad, I get even!”
      2. God forgave and forgot your sins. Can you do any less?
          C. Discipline yourself against Nursing Resentment
                    1. Remembering Injustice
                    2. Playing the "Victim Role"
VIII. LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF - v. 18c
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
You can never love either your neighbor nor yourself, until you have           personally met the Jesus who loves you. . .Seek Him today!
