This morning is my third advent sermon for 2017. I read about a grandfather that wanted to comfort his grandson. But because of the boy’s disobedience his mother had insisted that the boy stay in his playpen. The little fellow was crying his eyes out.
The boy's grandfather was in a dilemma, He loved the boy and wanted to pick him up to comfort him.  He knew, however, his daughter was right in her discipline. So he just climbed in the playpen with him! That's what Jesus did when He came to earth to bring comfort and healing: He became one of us.
The Collins English dictionary defines Incarnate: Embodiment in flesh; Given a body, especially a human body.
The apostle John wrote in John 1:14,
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John Betjeman wrote some memorable lines on the Incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ:
‘And is it true this most tremendous tale of all,
The Maker of the stars and sea
Became a child on earth for me?’
Another Christian writer wrote,
‘If Jesus had not been man,
He could not have redeemed men.
If He had not been a righteous man,
He could not have redeemed unrighteous men.
And if He had not been God’s Son,
He could not have redeemed men for God
or made them the sons of God.’

Our Greatest Need

If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator;
If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist;
If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist;
If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer;
But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.

Third Sunday of Advent - Pastor Phil Roland

1 John 1:1-7

"No great world religion can boast a god that came out of heaven and became one of us. Allah never became human flesh and gave his life for sinful mankind, neither did Buddha or the pantheon of Hindu gods. Only Jesus, unique in all the ages became God's Perfect Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world."    Pastor Phil  <><<

4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.     1 John 1:4

JOY - Greek,  χαρά, "CHA-RA" - Root Word
"CHA-RIS" = Grace OR Kindness
"CHA-RIS-MA" = Gift of Grace
"CHA-RIS-MA-TA" = Spiritual Gifts, as in Gifts of the Spirit

INCARNATE - Embodiment in flesh; Given a body, especially a human body

1 John 1:3 (NKJV)
3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

          A. KOIN-NO-NIA - The Koine Greek word for fellowship
                    1. We have a three-fold fellowship
                    2. We have relationship with one another, God the Father and                          Jesus, His Son
                    3. Our fellowship with one another is rooted in Jesus
          B. All Cults err in their understanding of the Incarnation of Jesus
                    1. JW teaching is that after Jesus' death on the Cross. . .
His spirit disappeared like a vapor. . .
                    2. Ancient Gnostics believed that Jesus was only. . .
An emanation of God's true source light
3. You cannot have Koinonia with a vapor or an emanation of                            light
                    4. You can only have a relationship with a person
                    5. That person is God has revealed in Jesus Christ in the flesh
          C. Jesus became the only Living God/Man
                    1. The God/Man - Never ceasing to be God, never ceasing to be                         man, clothed in Human Flesh

INCARNATE JOY, cont., p.2

                    2. Jesus was/is the Eternal Son of God who was and became                           to God/Man
                    3. Eg. A Baby Jesus Doll Christmas Gift
Like at Christmas, one store was not selling one of their hot new
items – a baby Jesus doll. The manager put out a sign that read
“Jesus Christ – marked down 50 %, get him while you can.
                    4. 50% of Jesus can never save anyone
                    5. Only ALL of Jesus can save you from your sins
                    6. It takes Jesus, the world's only God/Man to save you
                    7. He alone grants you relationship with Him
          D. D.L. Moody, great Chicago revivalist said,
"A rule I have had for years is to treat the Lord Jesus Christ as a                  personal friend. It is not a creed, a mere empty doctrine, but it is                  Christ Himself we have."
II. LIFE, GOD'S LIFE IN US  - 1 John 5:11,12
11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
          A. Eternal Life = ζωή = dzo-aye = The Never ending Life of God
                    1. God's Eternal Life is only thru relationship with His Son
                    2. Have the Son, Have Eternal Life
                    3. Have not the Son, have not Eternal Life
                    4. Know Jesus, Know Life / No Jesus, No Life
                    5. Jesus is the Secret to all Relationships
                    6. He's not like the world’s secret
          B. Without a relationship with Jesus we are "Dead Men Walking"
“he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” v. 12b
                    1. Tom Hank's Movie, The Green Mile
                    2. Dead Men Walking
                              a. “Edicts to Kill” Issued by Muslim Religionists
                              b. Victims of Fatwa
                              c. Offended the Muslim Faith
                    3. Revenge / Death, Natural Results of human life w/o Jesus
          C. Leaving this (Biological) Life is Gain because of Jesus – Phil. 1:21
“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
          D. We are an Eternal People because of our relationship w/Jesus
Eg. Like the obstetrician who was not home. His 5 years old daughter                         answered the doorbell. A man asked, “Is your daddy home?” She said,
“No, he’s gone out on an eternity case!” Every believer is an eternity case!
III. JOY, GOD'S JOY IN US - 1 John 1:4
4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
INCARNATE JOY, cont., p.3

          A. Vance Havner Quote:
“The average Sunday morning congregation appears as if it has gathered                     to mourn a defeat rather than celebrate a victory. Too many seem to be
enduring their salvation instead of enjoying it. We need to remind
ourselves that we’ve not been called to a funeral, but to a feast!"
1. We've been called by God to a Wedding Feast
                    2. It's the Marriage Supper of the Lamb
                    3. Admission only for those in rleationship w/the Groom
          B. God's Joy is our ultimate Source of Joy - Neh. 6:10b
". . . do not grieve, for the JOY OF THE LORD is your strength."
1. The Prophet, Nehemiah's full quote is
". . .Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to                                those who have nothing prepared.  This Day is sacred to our Lord.
Do not grieve, for the Joy of the Lord is your strength."
2. Our Joy is rooted in our Relationship w/Jesus - Rom. 14:17
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but
of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit”
          C. Incarnate Joy is found in a relationship with Jesus
                    1. Have you found that Joy?
                    2. I urge you, do it today!

1 John 1:1-7
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life--
2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us--
3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

One of the greatest theologians that ever lived, Karl Barth, was asked to be a guest lecturer at the University of Chicago Divinity School.  At the end of a captivating closing lecture, the president of the seminary
announced that Dr. Barth was not well and was quite tired, and though he thought that Dr. Barth would like to be open for questions, he shouldn't be expected to handle the strain. Then he said, "Therefore, I will ask just one question on behalf of all of us."
He turned to the renowned theologian and asked, "Of all the theological insights you have ever had, which do you consider to be the greatest of them all?
It was the perfect question for a man who had written literally tens of
thousands of pages of some of the most sophisticated theology ever put into print.  The students held pencils right up against their writing pads, ready to take down verbatim the premier insight of the greatest theologian of their time.
Karl Barth closed his tired eyes, and he thought for a minute, and then he half smiled, opened his eyes, and said to those young seminarians, "The greatest theological insight that I have ever had is this: "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so."
My dear friends in Christ, I submit to you that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest love story ever written!

Genesis 2:18 (NKJV)
18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."

Genesis 2:24 (NKJV)
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV)
24 A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 17:17 (NKJV)
17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

John 12:43-46 (NKJV)
43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
44 Then Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.
45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.
46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.

Charles Spurgeon
"All places are places of worship to a Christian. Wherever he                        is, he ought to be in a worshipping frame of mind."
                    John Piper
"Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever."

Luke 24:36-40 (NKJV)
36 Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, "Peace to you."
37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.
38 And He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have."
40 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

Abraham is such a fascinating figure. Three world religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - all claim him as a patriarch. He was raised in a religious home. And yet he rejected religion in order to pursue a personal relationship with God.

My parents had us in church every Sunday, every Wednesday. It was more of a tradition at that point; I didn't have a personal relationship with the Lord until I went to the altar call one Sunday, and the youth pastor told us to make a decision for ourselves. Related image
