SERMON STARTER

G O I N ’    H O M E
Late last October (10-29-2016) my Uncle Bill passed away. He was 89 years old. It was his time. My brother Don and I went to Dallas and Greenville, Texas to make the arrangements for his final place of rest. While we were there, we went to the place of my Roland grandparents homestead, 4410 Pine Street. We spent several  childhood summers there. The old house was torn down and a new brick home built in its place. Just the hump remained built by the railroad company when the old steamers chugged past grandma's house.
My words fail to express what I felt as I stood there. There was a deep longing. . .but for what?
Sleepy days under the 5 pecan trees surrounding her white frame house. . .
Cracking shells from her paper-shell pecans with a hammer and a brick for an afternoon snack. . .
The lazy buzzing of Cicada (sick-ah-da) in the treetops. . .
The taste of ripe figs picked from grandma's fig tree. . . .
Tasting the drop of sweetness from the stamen of a morning glory flower. . .
The sweet smell of the flowers growing over grandma's back door trellis. . .
The yellow pollen on your nose from a buttercup flower plucked from the field behind grandma's house. . .
The taste of a vine-ripened tomato from Grandma's victory Garden. . .
The sweet juice running down your chin as you wipe your face with  your shirt sleeve. . .
Geraldine Page was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Trip to Bountiful.  She kept repeating with such longing, "I'm going home to Bountiful." This sermon is dedicated to my friend and colleague, James Earl Erb who was laid to his rest yesterday (Saturday). He is at home with the Jesus he loved and served.

HEBREWS 11:13-16 - JOHN 14:1-6

"The very deepest longing of the human heart is to go back home. We know logically we cannot roll back time and re-live even a single moment of it, yet the longing persists. Thornton Wilder, playwright in his play, "Our Town" imagines the ability to pick a single day to go back to the past and live it fully. Our ultimate home and peace is with the Lord." Pastor Phil <><<

1 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.    John 14:1,2

15 Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints. Psalm 116:15

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE  HOME?
IMAGINE:
What it was like to COME HOME last year or five years ago?
HOW DOES HOME FEEL?
          RELAXATION
          REST
          COMFORT / SECURITY
          PEACE
          NURTURE
RENEWAL (Unwind from long tense day/You can be yourself)
GOIN’ HOME!
Where you don't have to perform!
A place of REST / DELIGHT / JOY!
Remember. . .John 14:2
"In My Father's House are many mansions...'
TRADITION SAYS:
Many Mansions are Heavenly Condominiums...
A place with many elegantly decorated rooms, just for us. . .
Ken Taylor, LB says,
"There are many rooms up there where my Father lives...”
I FEEL JESUS IS REFERRING TO THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION OF HEAVEN AND OF THE SPECIAL Resurrection Body THAT HE HAS PREPARED FOR EACH OF US WHO ARE...
GOIN’ HOME!
Three types of homes in scripture:
1) Earthly Father's Home
2) Heavenly Father's Home
3) Spiritual Home
GOING HOME, cont., p. 2

I.  GOIN’ HOME TO MY EARTHLY FATHER’S HOME
          A. Physical Home
                    1. Earthly Father/comfortable physical
                    2. Special Room decorated for me...
MY ROOM ... Decorate w/things of joy
                    3. Earthly Father's Home expensive or inexpensive...
                    4. ALL REMIND US OF THEIR OWNERS'.''
  5. You are fortunate in the Shenango Valley area
  6. Many of you have lived in the houses in which you reside 10
     years or more
  7. My dad liked to move...
8. During my youth I can remember living in more than 12 different houses....
10. A house should be a secure, constant, peaceful kind of place!
B. Physical Body - Another legacy of my earthly Father
    1. Come in different sizes, colors/shapes. wrinkled at first
    2. Some of us are young ... some aging....
Little girl sitting on grandads’ lap,  looked up at him and said,                                    "Grandfather, is it true that God made you and that He made me?"                   "Yea,' he replied, 'that's so!"
'Isn't He doing much better work these days?'
                    3. Physical Bodies are like tents. . .temporary dwelling places
                    4. They are not the right kind of bodies to live forever
   5. I cannot live forever. . . In my earthly Father’s House
   6. My earthly father’s House embarrasses me as I age. . .
How do I know my youth is all spent?
My get up and go has got up and went!
By losing it's "Hair... (Grey)  By losing it’s shape. . .
            C. My Physical Body's Mortality
ONE DAY IN HIS EIGHTIETH YEAR JOHN QUINCY ADAMS was tottering             down a Boston street.  He was WAS APPROACHED by a friend who said,             "And how is John Quincy Adams today?
The former PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, replied graciously!
"Thank you, John Quincy Adams is quite well, sir, quite well, and I thank     you. But the house in which he lives at present is becoming dilapidated. It      is tottering upon its foundations. Time and the seasons have nearly            destroyed it. Its roof is pretty well worn out,  its walls are much shattered,    and it trembles with every wind. The old tenement is becoming almost      uninhabitable, and I think that John Quincy Adams will have to move out of
it soon; but he himself is quite well, sir, quite well.”  And with this the
venerable statesman, leaning heavily upon his cane, moved slowly down the
  Boston cobble-stoned street.
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS - Like the rest of us - Was soon to be - GOIN’ HOME!
Leaving behind his earthly Father’s House. . .
GOING HOME, cont., p. 3

Second Kind of Home mentioned in Scripture:
II.  Goin’ Home to my Heavenly Father's Home - John 14:2
2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you

               A. My Spiritual Home: the legacy of my Heavenly Father - Luke  23:43
43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me
               in Paradise."
                    1. Church home/house - Mortgages, Steeples, Store Fronts
                    2. Different shapes/sizes - Some Formal/Some Informal;
                              Some Stiff / Some Relaxed
                              Different denominational labels
         3. Some Observe Reverence to earthly/physical building...
                    4. Place of spiritual worship of the living God
                    5. Not the true HOME of the Heavenly Father
                    6. But a reminder of it!
                    7. All I know is the Heavenly Father's Home is where Jesus is
          B. Jesus made many valid promises - John 5:24; Jn. 6:47; Jn. 8:51
24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him                     who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but                       has passed from death into life.
47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.
51 Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see                    death."
                    1. Jesus Promises "Zo-Waine" now, present tense
                    2. We who observe His Word shall not look morbidly at death
                    3. We'll just be. . .GOIN’ HOME!
Third Kind of Home mentioned in Scripture:
III.  GOIN’ HOME TO MY SPIRITUAL HOME - 2 Corinthians 5:1
1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

                              A. ACCEPTING JESUS INTO YOUR HEART...
Makes you a candidate for one of His. . . “many rooms. . .”
          B. BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD
Believe that you, too, shall be victorious over death...
          C. COMMIT YOUR LIFE TO JESUS
                    Receive Christ into your hearts!
ALLOW His love to become real in you!
Believe that you will live with Him for all eternity. . .because, after all. . You’re. . .GOIN’ HOME!
“In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” John 14:2

GOIN’  HOME!
GOIN’  HOME!
Some years ago a load of sheep was shipped from Scotland to Australia.  Just before the boat reached Australia, the sheep refused to eat their dry grain and hay.  At the same time a dense fog covered the waters, and for two days the ship was obliged to stop.  All the while, the sheep paid no attention to their food.
Then, the fog lifted, and before them were the green fields of Australia.  The sheep had smelled the green pasture of the land nearby, and it caused them to lose all appetite for dry food.

G O I N'  H O M E
Hebrews 11:13-16 (NIV)
13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.
14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
16 Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

G O I N'  H O M E
John 14:1-6 (NKJV)
1 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
4 And where I go you know, and the way you know."
5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"
6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

GOIN' HOME
Anton Dvoorak, New World Symphony

Goin' home. Goin' home. I'm a-goin' home.
Quiet-like some still day, I'm just goin' home.
It's not far, just close by, through an open door.
Work all done, cares laid by, goin' to roam no        more;
Mother's there 'xpecting me, father's waiting, too,
Lots of folks gathered there, all the friends I knew.

Morning star lights the way, restless dream all done.
Shadows gone, break of day, real life just begun.
There's no break, there's no end, just a-living on;
Wide awake, with a smile, going on and on.
Going home. Going home, I'm just going home.
It's not far, just close by, through an open door.

IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE

No, not cold beneath the grasses,
          Not close-walled within the tomb;
Rather, in My Father's mansion,
          Living in another room.

Living, like the one who loves me,
Like my child with cheeks abloom
Out of sight at desk or school-book,
          Busy in another room.

Nearer than my son whom fortune
          Beckons where the strange lands loom;
Just beyond the hanging curtain,
          Serving in another room.

Shall I doubt my Father's mercy?
Shall I think of death as doom,
Or the stepping o're the threshold
          To a bigger, brighter room?

Shall I blame my Father's wisdom?
Shall I sit enswathed in gloom,
When I know my loves are happy,
    Waiting in the other room?

John 14:3
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back
and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

GOIN’ HOME!
LITTLE KENNETH a small boy who had an incurable disease didn't understand. He was his mother's only  son. Tenderly, she had nursed him...
Month after month she played with him...
HOPING somehow to keep him from realizing the finality of the doctor's diagnosis.
BUT AS THE WEEKS WENT ON. . .
Little Kenneth grew no better.
Gradually, the little fellow began to understand that he would never be like the          other little boys who played outside his window.
AS SMALL AS HE WAS, Kenneth began to understand the meaning of death ... and                    that he, too, was to die.
ONE DAY his mother had been reading to him the stirring tales of
King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table . . .
          of LANCELOT and GUINEVERE,
and ELAINE, the  Lily Maid of Astolat...
and of that last glorious battle in which so many fair knights met their death.
AS SHE CLOSED THE BOOK, the boy sat silent for an instant as though deeply stirred with the trumpet call of the OLD ENGLISH tale, and then asked the question that had been weighing on his childish heart:
"Mother, what is it like to die?
                              Mother, does it hurt?"
QUICK TEARS sprang to her eyes and she fled to the kitchen... supposedly to tend to something on the stove.
SHE KNEW it was a question of deep significance.
SHE KNEW it must be answered satisfactorily.
AS SHE LEANED for an instant against the kitchen         cabinette...her knuckles pressed white against the smooth    porcelen surface.
SHE BREATHED a hurried prayer that God would keep her from breaking down in front of the boy...
and that the Lord would tell her how to answer him.
AND THE LORD DID TELL HER!
In a moment she knew how to answer him.
"Kenneth, she began as she returned to the next room,
"'Do you remember when you were just a tiny boy. You used to play so hard all day that when night came you would be too tired even to undress, and you would tumble into your mother's bed and fall asleep?
THAT WAS NOT YOUR BED, it was not where you belonged
AND YOU WOULD ONLY STAY THERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE.
IN THE MORNING, much to your surprise, you would wake up and find yourself in your own bed in your own room.
YOU WERE THERE BECAUSE SOMEONE HAD LOVED                   YOU AND TAKEN CARE OF YOU.
YOUR FATHER HAD COME WITH HIS BIG, STRONG ARMS AND CARRIED YOU AWAY.
KENNETH. . .DEATH IS JUST LIKE THAT.
WE JUST WAKE UP SOME MORNING TO FIND OURSELVES IN THE OTHER ROOM...OUR OWN ROOM     WHERE WE BELONG...BECAUSE THE LORD JESUS      LOVED US.”

The small boy's shining face looking trustingly up into hers told          her that the point had gone home!
THERE WOULD BE NO MORE FEAR!
ONLY LOVE AND TRUST WOULD BE IN HIS LITTLE HEART AS HE WENT TO MEET THE FATHER IN HEAVEN'.
LITTLE KENNETH NEVER QUESTIONED AGAIN. . .
SEVERAL WEEKS LATER HE FELL ASLEEP JUST AS SHE    HAD SAID!
THAT’S WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE. . .

GOIN’  HOME!
Going Home, cont., p.8
There is the legacy of my EARTHLY FATHER. . .This flesh. . .
I must one day lay it aside. . .
In order to be clothed with my...
Heavenly Father's House. . .
The resurrection body which He has prepared for me and for     you!
AND WE SHALL LIVE AGAIN!
WE SHALL LIVE ON AND ON INTO ETERNITY,
                    TIME WITHOUT END!
BUT NOT WITH A BODY LIKE THIS:
THAT CAN BE CRUSHED OR BROKEN. . .
          OR HAVE A WRINKLED BROW. . .
OR EYES THAT GROW DIM. . .
OR A SPINE THAT FEELINS CONSTANT PAIN. . .
OR AN AMPUTATED LEG. . .
OR WITH AN INJURED, BROKEN HEART. . .
OR A MIND THAT IS HAUNTED WITH FEAR. . .
EATEN UP WITH BITTER MEMORIES. . .
NO!  UNDENYABLY NO!
ONE DAY, WE SHALL RISE, NOT CLOTHED WITH THIS MORTAL, DYING CLAY. . .
NOT WITH THE GARMENTS OF MORTAL FLESH. . .
BUT WE SHALL RISE CLOTHED WITH THE SHINING GLORY OF THE LIVING GOD. . .
GOIN’  HOME?
we shall be at the eternal home of rest in god!

John 14:3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back
and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
