ENGAGING IN SPIRITUAL  WARFARE

SERMON STARTER

I never understood the concept of Spiritual Warfare until I genuinely gave my heart to Christ and determined to be in daily communication with Him. The Call of Christ into His Kingdom is a call to battle. We must put on the whole armor of God to both resist and defeat the enemy. The hoards of hell will throw everything they can at you to distract you from maintaining a relationship with God.

The police in Dallas, Texas became engaged in Spiritual Warfare when a disgruntled African American sharpshooter drew aim from a nearby rooftop and murdered 5 police officers and wounded 7 more. Domestic terrorists are no different than Islamic terrorists. They both traffic in fear, hate and revenge. Technically, the enemy of our souls intends to terrorize in the same way.

The enemy's purpose is to distract believers away from intimacy with God and to take them away from the spiritual

war. The person desiring revenge must dig two graves: one for his enemy and one for himself. The was of Jesus and the Kingdom is to release your adversary and yourself from anger, hate and revenge.

My sermon this morning intends to bring light onto the enemy's strategies to keep you from Engaging in Spiritual Warfare.

ENGAGING IN SPIRITUAL  WARFARE

Becoming A Christian Believer Conscripts You Into a War

MARK 5:1-20

“We have been called into a battle. It is not for the faint of heart. With God as our Commander-In-Chief, we can know we will ultimately win the war.”                                                                                                                 Pastor Phil Roland

FIVE DEADLY SPIRITUAL WEAPONS:

1) The Word of God - Luke 4  - “It is written. . . “

2) The Blood of Jesus - Rev. 12:11a -“They overcame him by the Blood of the Lamb”

3) The Word of Testimony - Rev. 12:11b -End-Time Saints overcame their enemies “ by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony.”

4) Praise Neh. 8:10; Acts 16:25 – “. . .the joy of the LORD is your strength.”And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”

5) The Name of Jesus - Phil. 2:9-11 - “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

FOUR TYPES OF WARFARE:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR - a war causing or relating to a great or complete change. Eg. American Revolutionary War, 1790 - 1800. It was the American Colonies Emancipation from England. Revolutionary war is one of the most difficult types of wars to deal with because the Guerrilla warrior  is usually willing to keep the war going for ten or more years.

CIVIL WAR - a war between forces belonging to the same nation or political entity. Eg. America's War between the States over slavery.

WORLD WAR - a war involving many or most of the world's most powerful and populous countries. World wars span multiple countries on multiple continents with battles fought in multiple theatres. World War I and World Wars II are examples.

SPIRITUAL WAR - The struggle of goodness against the forces of evil that is a constant feature of the life of faith. The origins of spiritual warfare is in the rebellion of Satan and his angels against God. Spiritual victory affirms the hope of God’s final victory over such forces through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection.

PRINCIPLES OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

I.  JESUS’ ENEMY CAME TO HIM - Text v. 2a

2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
          A.  Kingdom Principle: Don’t seek the enemy, he’ll come to you!

                        1. One warrior attracts another!

                        2. There is no neutrality in Spiritual warfare

                        3. You are either For Jesus or Against Him - Luke 11:23
23 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather

                           with Me scatters.

            B. The Gadarian Man was POSSESSED by a demon

                        1. Can’t minimize spiritual attack by labeling it "Mental Illness"

                        2. There is a distinctive difference

                        3. Mental Illness is often a medically treatable disorder

                        4. Demonic Infection responds only to Spiritual Warfare

            C. Appearance of Jesus’ Enemy

                        1. He will meet you immediately as you attempt to pray

                        2. The enemy sees any contact with God as threatening

                        2. He will find you and go where you are

ANOTHER  PRINCIPLE OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

II.  JESUS’ ENEMY KNEW SUFFERING AND DEATH - v.3a

3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains,

          A. Satan’s Ultimate Desire is to see you Dead

                        1. Since your first breath the enemy has plotted your death

                        2. We receive God's Love and Mercy

            B. God’s Grace is Ours not Satan’s

                        1. He despises mankind and God's redemption for us

                        2. He has sinned the sin without pardon - See Isaiah 14:13,14

ANOTHER  PRINCIPLE OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

III. JESUS’ ENEMY WAS STRONG - v. 3b

3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains,

          A. Scripture calls Him “The Strong Man” - Luke 11:20

20 But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of

              God has come upon you.

                        1. With His little finger Jesus casts out 5,500 demons

                        2. Greater is He in you - 1 John 4:4

4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because

He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

            B. Satan is too Strong for you to Battle Alone!

                        1. God gives us 10 amazing promises He will not abandon us

                        2. With God all things are possible - Mark 10:27

ENGAGING IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE, p.3

ANOTHER  PRINCIPLE OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

IV. JESUS’ ENEMY KNEW WHO HE WAS - v. 6

6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice

and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?

            B. The demoniac Wanted Deliverance / Begged for Mercy - v.7

                        1. Demons believe and tremble - James 2:19

19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons

                          believe--and tremble!

                        2. Jesus was/is God in Human Flesh

ANOTHER  PRINCIPLE OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

V.  JESUS’ ENEMY WAS MANY - v.9

9 Then He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying,

"My name is Legion; for we are many."

          A. Jesus was NOT Intimated by Numbers

                        1. A Roman Legion was 5500 men

                        2. Apparently Spiritual armies parallel Physical Armies

            B. People who know their God shall be Strong. . .Dan. 11:32

32 Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with

flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out

              great exploits.

ANOTHER  PRINCIPLE OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

VI. JESUS SPOKE WITH AUTHORITY - v. 8

8 For He said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!"
          A. Jesus had power over the enemy, so do we - John 1:12, KJV

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons

of God, even to them that believe on his name:

            B. We shall bruise the Serpent's Head - Genesis 3:15

ANOTHER  PRINCIPLE OF ENGAGING IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR:

VII.  JESUS COMMISSIONED THE DEMONIAC - v.19

19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends,

and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had

compassion on you."
          A. Jesus commissions whom He will to specific tasks

            B. The Word of our Testimony defeats the enemy

            C. Read the end of the Book: We win!
