THE DARK SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE
SERMON STARTER
          Mark Twain once said,
"We're all like the moon—we have a dark side."
I think his analysis of human nature was right on target. Deep down inside every human being, there is an inclination to evil. There is a fascination with the darkness of sin. Like a moth to a flame, we are drawn to the edge of the precipice which is the destruction of our own souls through sin's darkness.
I like Russian Author Leo Tolstoy's point of view,
“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”
I hear people telling me,
"The trouble with the world is_________________."
(You fill in the blank.)
Mass Murderers, Serial Murderers, Substance Abuse, Washington Politics, Terrorists, Gun Violence, Domestic Violence,. . .
One Blog on the Darkside of human nature said it is
"killing, hurting, lying, violence, hate, disrespect, racism... just totally bad, evil stuff."
Galatians 5:19-21 says the Dark Side is,
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like. . .
The Proverb writer puts it this way in Proverbs 6:16-19
16 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
My sermon this morning  explores the Dark Side of Human Nature and God's remedy through a dynamic, growing relationship with Jesus Christ..

THE DARK SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE
1 John 1:5-10 - 1 John 2:1-6
"Before I can cope with the dark side of humanity, I must learn to cope with the dark side of me. I cannot change the world, but I can confront them one at a time. I can, however, change me."                  Pastor Phil Roland  <><<

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.      Galatians 5:19-21

I.  THE DARK SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE - 1 John 1:5
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
            A. "Light" describes in this text, God's goodness in us
                        1. Light is Transparency
                        2. Light is Openness
                        3. Light is Accountability
                        4. Light is Responsibility
                        5. Light is Teachable  (Receives Correction)
            B. "Darkness" describes in this text, the absence of God in us
                        1. Darkness is Withdrawn
                        2. Darkness is Closed
                        3. Darkness is No Accountability
                        4. Darkness is Irresponsibility
                        5. Darkness is Defiant / Unteachable  (Never Wrong)
            C. Our Culture Walks in Darkness 1 John 1:6
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie
and do not practice the truth.
                        1. Hypocrisy Talks the Talk, but doesn't  Walk the Walk
                        2. Technology makes us no different than any other century
                        3. Same national bullies, same injustices, same atrocities
            D. Churches are filled with immature, narcissistic "Believers"
                Heb. 5:12-13
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to
teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have
come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only                  of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
                        1. Black and White thinkers - See world in only 2 dimensions
                        2. Splitting of the personality - Valuing/Devaluing People
                        3. Immature Believers are Narcissistic - "It's all about me!"
THE DARK SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE, cont. p. 2

                        4. Parents teach their children to think Black / White
                        5. Matures into an adulthood splitting - External / Internal
                        6. Creates a Public Face and a Private Face
                        7. Find ourselves asking, "Are you for real?"
            E. Bible is clear about the Dark Side of Human Nature
                        1. Jeremiah says in 17:9
                                9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked;
                          Who can know it?
                        2. David relates in Psalm 14:1-3
1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The fool has said in his
heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, They have done
abominable works, There is none who does good. 2 The LORD looks
down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any
who understand, who seek God. 3 They have all turned aside, They
have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No,
                         not one.
                        3. Those who choose to walk in darkness, end in death
                         Proverbs 14:12
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the
                           way of death.

II.  THE GOD LIGHT SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE - 1 John 1:7
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
            A. There is Hope when we honestly confess - 1 John 1:9
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to               cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
                        1. Confession sheds God's Light on our "Dark Side"
                        2. Light always dispels darkness
                        3. Astronauts traveling on the Space Station can easily see                                    man-made lights
                        4. They can easily see Las Vegas Luxor Hotel's "Fluorescent                                Hat"
            B. Agree with God's Word about your own (Dark Side) Sinful Nature
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and
His word is not in us.
                        1. We are all Sinners, Own it - Romans 3:23
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
                        2. When we pass judgment, we imply we are ABOVE it
                        3. Only by exposing my own inner darkness can God heal me
            C. Let Jesus be your Advocate  - 1 John 2:1,2
1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And
if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours
only but also for the whole world.
                        1. All His Blood shed on Calvary to cover your sins
                        2. Allow his light to penetrate your darkness
THE DARK SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE, cont. p. 3

            D. Obey Jesus' commands to Love - 1 John 2:3,4
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a
liar, and the truth is not in him.
                        1. Loving God and Mankind is NOT an option, it's a command
                        2. Eg. Anti-Semitic friend, walks in darkness, is NOT a believer
                        3. Walking in Love is proof we are walking in God's Light
            E. Display a Lifestyle of 24/7 Following Jesus - 1 John 2:5
5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By
this we know that we are in Him.

III.  WALKING OUT OF DARKNESS IN JESUS LIGHT  - 1 John 2:6
6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
            A. The Sheepfold was organized intentionally to avoid "Playing                              Religion"
                        1. Too many Religious Spectators, not enough Players
                        2. Must get out of the stands and onto the field
                        3. Eg. Religious Leader who is a spectator to Life's Drama
            B. Eg. Sir Alexander Fleming illustration
Upon introducing his newly discovered drug, penicillin, Dr.
Fleming warned against taking too little of it. An under-dose, he                         said would permit germs to remain in the system thereby allowing
one to build up an immunity to the drug. These immune germs
could be "passed on to other individuals so that the thoughtless
person playing with penicillin treatments may be responsible for
the death of another" if not himself as well.
                        1. Too many "believers" are careless in the spiritual realm
                        2. They take in just enough "religion" to become immune to
                             the real thing
                        3. They take in just enough religious services to temporarily
                             quiet their conscience
                                    a. Attend enough weddings and funerals
                                    b. Go to enough religious meetings
                        4. Substitute for a genuine encounter with the person of Jesus
                        5. Get just enough religion to become immune to the real thing
            C. Let's be open to God like Jesus demonstrated every minute
                 Philippians 4:8
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble,
whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are
lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if
there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.
                        1. Invite God's Light to follow you wherever you go
                        2. Blow away the world's Darkness with the light of God's Love

MORAL AND ETHICAL FAILURE AMONG PASTORS

Pastors today are faced with more work, more problems, and more stress than any other time in the history of the church. This is taking a frightening toll on the ministry, shown by the statistics below:

Pastors:

1. Fifteen hundred pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, spiritual burnout or contention in their churches.

2. Four thousand new churches begin each year, but over seven thousand churches close.

3. Fifty percent of pastors' marriages will end in divorce.

4. Eighty percent of pastors and eighty-four percent of their spouses feel unqualified and discouraged in their role as pastors.

5. Fifty percent of pastors are so discouraged that they would leave the ministry if they could, but have no other way of making a living.

6. Eighty percent of seminary and Bible school graduates who enter the ministry will leave the ministry within the first five years. Ninety percent of pastors said their seminary or Bible school training did only a fair to poor job preparing them for ministry.

7. Eighty-five percent of pastors said their greatest problem is they are sick and tired of dealing with problem people, such as disgruntled elders, deacons, worship leaders, worship teams, board members, and associate pastors. Ninety percent said the hardest thing about ministry is dealing with uncooperative people.

8. Seventy percent of pastors feel grossly underpaid.

9. Ninety percent said the ministry was completely different than what they thought it would be before they entered the ministry.

10. Seventy percent felt God called them to pastoral ministry before their ministry began, but after three years of ministry, only fifty percent still felt called.

Jim Henson in 1982 produced "The Dark Crystal," exploring the dark side of human nature through his creepy puppets. Buddist theology challenges adherants to eliminate the "dark side of their humanity" through deep contemplation and self-denial.

Galatians 5:16-26 (NKJV)
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
