Sheepfold Ministries, Pastor Phil Roland

Hearing His Voice

JOHN 10:1-6 – 22-30

“We fret and worry about hearing or getting a Word from God.  How do we get a personal word from God? First we have to sort out the distracting voices.”  Pastor Phil  <><<

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Jn. 10:27

THE VOICE OF THE WORLD

Audible voice of another human being

Acts 5:29

”But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.”

THE VOICE OF THE FLESH / SELF

Luke 16:3

“Then the steward said within himself, 'What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg.”

Jonah 4:8

”And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

Luke 12:17

”And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’”

Psalm 42:11

”Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.”

THE VOICE OF SATAN

Matthew 4:l-l3. You can read of the type of conversations Satan has with God in Job l:7-l2 and 2:l-6.

Satan speaks to Eve in the Garden

Gen. 3:1,4,5

3 ”Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Luke 4:33,34

”Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of God!"

THE VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

John 10:3-5

”To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

John 16:13

”However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

John 10

Jesus the True Shepherd

1“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

6Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

22Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter.

23And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. 24Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me.

26But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.

27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

28And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

30I and My Father are one.”

INTRODUCTION:

Verizon Commercial:

          “Can you hear me now?”

The commercial is trying to make a point about how well and how good the reception is for their phone service. No matter where you are; no matter how far away; Verizon service is still available and usable. You are never out of range.

INTRODUCTION:

My Greek professor, Lyle Story, told the story of his trip to Israel. He saw two shepherd boys walking along side by side and talking with each other. Behind each shepherd were his sheep following along in single file. Lyle explained that the sheep that belonged to each shepherd knew their shepherd’s voice and followed him.

Jesus said,

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” v. 27

Note that one of the conditions for hearing the voice of the shepherd is that He KNOWS them. Does the Great Shepherd of the Sheep know you?

INTRODUCTION:

"Two men were walking along a crowded city sidewalk. Suddenly, one of the men remarked: "Listen to the lovely sound of that cricket."

But the other man could not hear the sound of the cricket at all.

He asked his friend: "How can you hear the sound of a cricket ... amid the roar of the traffic and the sounds of the city."

The first man, who was a zoologist, had trained himself to hear the sounds of nature.

He didn’t explain to his friend how he could hear the sound of the cricket, ..... instead, he reached into his pocket, ....pulled out a half-dollar coin,.... dropped it onto the sidewalk, And watched intently as a dozen people began to look for the coin as they heard it clanking amid the sounds of the traffic and the sounds of the city.

He turned to his friend and said, ..... "We hear ....what we listen for."

Beloved... (Slow) We hear what we listen for.

HEARING HUMOR

There is a story about a man was having difficulty communicating with his wife and concluded that she was becoming hard of hearing.

So he decided to conduct a test..... without her knowing about it.

One evening he sat in a chair on the far side of the room.

Her back was to him and she could not see him.

Very quietly he whispered, "Can you hear me?" There was no response.

Moving a little closer, he asked again, "Can you hear me now?"

Still no reply; quietly he edged closer and whispered the same words, but still no answer.

Finally, he moved right in behind her chair and said, "Can you hear me now?"

To his surprise and chagrin, she responded with irritation in her voice, "For the fourth time, yes!" (Pause)

The hearing problem is not with God. .....It is with us!
