Declaring His Generation
SERMON STARTER
In ancient Roman Times, when a prisoner was about to be led forth to death, a crier made proclamation calling on anyone to come forward and assert his innocence, and declare his manner of life. From the Jewish Mishna it is recorded like this,
"Whosoever knows any thing of this man's innocence, let him come and declare it. "
It was customary when sentence of death was passed upon a criminal, and he was led out from the Seat of Judgment to the place of punishment, a crier went before, and spoke as follows:
'This man is going out to suffer death by - because he has transgressed by (- such a transgression, in such a place, in such a time;) and the witnesses against him are - . He who may know any thing relative to his innocence let him come and speak in his behalf.'"
Jesus was charged by the Jewish Sanhedrin with Blasphemy: Claiming to be the Son of God which carried a sentence of death.
Luke records in Acts 8:33
“In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth."
In Jesus’ illegal night-time sham trial by the Jewish Sanhedrin, no witnesses were allowed to speak in His behalf. No one spoke for Him in private or in public. Fear kept the public world-be-defenders silent.
'Here is Jesus, who is called the Christ. He is going out to suffer death by crucifixion because he has transgressed by claiming repeatedly to be the Son of God and the witnesses against him are the entire Jewish religious community. He who may know any thing relative to his innocence let him stand forth and declare it!
NO ONE. . .Not one of His community neighbors in Nazareth spoke for Him.
Not one of the many people He healed and restored to life spoke for Him.
Not one of His disciples who had been with Him and heard his teaching and saw His miracles spoke for Him?
What keeps us silent in this politically-correct world of ours? Is it fear or shame? Do we fear the ridicule of our peers?
Are we fearful of what others may think of us? What keeps is in our silence? This sermon aims at loosing the tongues of silent witnesses.

Declaring His Generation
Isaiah 53
New King James Version (NKJV)
53 Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
9 And they[a] made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul,[b] and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.
BARNES NOTES
Some have supposed that it refers to the fact that when a prisoner was about to be led forth to death, a crier made proclamation calling on anyone to come forward and assert his innocence, and declare his manner of life. But there is not sufficient proof that this was done among the Jews, and there is no evidence that it was done in the case of the Lord Jesus. Nor would this interpretation exactly express the sense of the Hebrew. In regard to the meaning of the passage, besides the sense referred to above, we may refer to the following opinions which have been held, and which are arranged by Hengstenberg:
CLARK’S COMMENTARY
And who shall declare his generation "And his manner of life who would declare" - A learned friend has communicated to me the following passages from the Mishna, and the Gemara of Babylon, as leading to a satisfactory explication of this difficult place.
It is said in the former, that before any one was punished for a capital crime, proclamation was made before the prisoner by the public crier, in these words:
כל מי שיודע לו זכות יבא וילמד עליו col mi shioda lo zachoth yabo vayilmad alaiv,
"whosoever knows any thing of this man's innocence, let him come and declare it. "
"It was customary when sentence of death was passed upon a criminal, and he was led out from the seat of judgment to the place of punishment, a crier went before, and spoke as follows:
'This man is going out to suffer death by - because he has transgressed by - such a transgression, in such a place, in such a time; and the witnesses against him are - . He who may know any thing relative to his innocence let him come and speak in his behalf.'"
