SHAKE AND BLOW INTRODUCTION
Washington policy makers think of themselves as the "shakers and movers," but an earthquake and a hurricane has shaken and blown people off the East Coast of the United States. Lois and I haven't felt the effects of Hurricane Irene. but we did feel the earth move from the D.C. area earthquake of last week.
Have you ever thought how inappropriate the hurricane name "Irene" is? ’Irene’ is a Greek word that means ‘peace’. Obviously, there is nothing remotely peaceful about a hurricane; there is calm in their eye, but that’s about it. Hurricanes bring destruction and damage, not peace. Thus I am awarding ‘Hurricane Irene’ the title of the Oxymoron Of The Week.
By now you know the 5.8 quake was centered in Virginia, just northwest of Richmond. It shook Washington D.C. and tremors reached New York and even further north. The epicenter of last week's earthquake was just 84 miles from D.C. The first earthquake that hit in the D.C. area was just 30 miles away and was a 3.6 quake. That was on July 16, 2010. God was merely clearing His throat.
Most of us didn't notice that there were three earthquakes in three days in the United States. First there was the magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Trinidad, Colo., the largest earthquake in that state since 1973. Then a magnitude 5.8 quake centered in Mineral, Va., jarred a region from Charleston, S.C. to Boston. Finally, there was a relatively mild 3.6 in the San Francisco area Tuesday night.
CURIOUS. . .Sometimes you have to shake people to wake them up. . .Hmmmm. . .

SHAKE AND BLOW Matthew 24:1-14 (NKJV)
CLOSING ILLUSTRATION CAN YOU SLEEP WHEN THE WIND BLOWS?
Years ago, a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops.
As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farm hand?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man.
Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!" The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows."
Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew. QUESTIONS: Can you sleep when the wind of adversity blows in your life? Does what you value and own have the ability to withstand when God shakes it? Are the things that really matter to you in this life fully secured? |
