OUR GOD REIGNS

SERMON STARTER

Aging is both one of the most natural and most difficult aspects of living in human flesh. The spirit feels immortal and it is, but the body of flesh in which it resides is temporal. It matters not whether you are dealing with issues of life or death, our God reigns and rules over all. God’s in control. Technically, the more you feel out of control, the more potential there is for God to be in control of your life. Wherever you are in this life, whatever you are going through, He is greater than your problem. Surrender yourself to His control and allow Him to lead.

Our God Reigns!”

OUR GOD REIGNS

1 Cor. 15:20-28

God’s in control. Wherever you are in life, whatever you are going through, He is greater than your problem. Surrender to His control and allow Him to lead. Our God Reigns.”                                                                                                                                             Pastor Phil

“For He must reign until God has put everything under His feet.”    v. 25

REIGN = “The exercise of SOVEREIGN POWER”

“The authority and influence of a King over His Kingdom!”

OUR GOD REIGNS!

The Kingdom power and rulership of our God is extended over us

            in FOUR unique ways:

I.   HE HAS DIED FOR ALL MEN

            A. The influence of the Cross of Christ is universal

                        1. The arms of Jesus are extended to all

                        2. Jesus’ Call goes beyond the sectarian few

            B. We are a Holy Nation under the Banner of Christ – 1 Peter 2:9

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people

belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of

darkness into his wonderful light.”

                        1. Chosen people for a Kingdom Purpose

                        2. Royal Priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices

                        3. Holy Nation whose goal is to hear and obey the King

            C. He died in our place – Vicarious – One died for all

                        1. His death frees us from its tyranny – Hebrews 2:14,15

“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity

so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—

that is, the devil-- and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by

their fear of death.”

2. He died physically and spiritually for us

OUR GOD REIGNS!

The Kingdom power and rulership of our God is extended over us because

II.   HE HAS RISEN

  1. A.     He reigns in life because He has risen over death, hell and the grave

1. Easter Hymn: “Christ Arose,” Third Verse

“Death could not keep his prey, Jesus my Savior!

He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!”

Up from the grave He arose with a mighty triumph o’re His foes

He arose a victor fro the dark domain,

and He lives forever with His Saints to reign;

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!”

                        2. He rules over them all

            B. Christ’s Resurrection means that His tomb was empty

            C. The tombs of all the world’s great religious leaders have mortal

Remains

1. Cheops – the Great Pyramid of Gaza

2. Buddha has a tomb

3. Mohammad has a tomb

4. Lennin has a tomb

5. Gandhi has a tomb

5. Princess Dianna has a tomb

            D. There are no bones of Jesus

                        1. He has Risen!  He has Risen indeed!

                        2. He has promised Resurrection life to us - 1 John 14:19

“Because I live, you shall live, also!”

OUR GOD REIGNS!

The Kingdom power and rulership of our God is extended over us because

III.  HE WILL RETURN AGAIN

  1. A.     Three powerful witnesses agree

1. Luke – He returns as He has left - Acts 1:11

"Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

2. John – He comes with clouds” - Revelation 1:7

“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.”

3. Paul – We shall meet Him in the air - 1 Thes. 4:16,17

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

            B. All agree He will come again

            C. He is coming again for we who love Him – Hebrews 9:28

“so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will

appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are

(eagerly) waiting for him.”

OUR GOD REIGNS!

The Kingdom power and rulership of our God is extended over us because

IV.  HE WILL SUBDUE ALL ENEMIES OF OUR GOD

  1. A.     God’s enemies are our enemies – Ephesians 1:20-21

“He (God) raised Him (Jesus) from the dead and seated him at his right hand in

the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion,

and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one

to come.”

                        1. Dominion – Archias – Ancient Ruling Ones

                        2. Authority – Exousias – Power imbued in worldly authority

                        3. Power – Dunamis – Power and strength to act in the

physical universe

            B. All worldly influence and power that opposes the Will of God

                        1. Bodies that age, deteriorate and decay

                        2. All influences of sin and evil that destroy us

                        3. ALL will one day soon be under His Feet!

            C. He Reigns over “The Sting”

OUR GOD REIGNS, Texts:

1 Corinthians 15:20-28

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

21  For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

22  For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

23  But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.

24  Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

25  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

26  The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

27  For he "has put everything under his feet." Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.

28  When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

Ephesians 1:16-23

16  I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

17  I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

18  I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

19  and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

20  which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

21  far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22  And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

23  which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

THE STING

1 Corinthians 15: 54:57

“So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?"  The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

A father and son were traveling down a country road on afternoon in the spring time when suddenly a bee flew in the window. Being deathly allergic to bee stings, the boy began to panic as the bee buzzed all around inside the car. Seeing the horror on his child’s face, the father reached out and caught the bee in his hand. Soon, he opened his hand and the bee began to buzz around once again. Again, the boy began to panic. The father reached over to his son, and opened his hand showing him the stinger still in his palm.

“Relax, son,” the father said, “I took the sting! The bee can’t hurt you anymore.”

The empty tomb is God’s way of saying to us;

“Relax, my child, I took the sting! Death can’t hurt you anymore.”
