10) Substance Abuse and Addictions

happiness!”

Believing the devil’s lies can rob you of true happiness.  Holding onto anger and rage can drain you of your potential in life. A friend asked me to counsel with his son. The 16 year-old had to withdraw from the school environment. He is uncomfortable in social settings. The young fellow feels that people are looking at him and judging him. I explained that he was not only judging other people, but he was also venting his rage and anger on himself.  If he would only forgive himself and give up the rage, then it would be easier to be with others.

Jesus taught us that the same judgment with which we judged others would be given to us. It isn’t just God that is part of this equation, our own angry heart figures in here as well. It is easy to say that one of the main things that blocks happiness in our lives is our inability to deal with anger toward ourselves and/or others. This sermon explores the blocks to happiness in the Christian life.

Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have

against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these

virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the

peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you

were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you

richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you

sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to

God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name

of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col. 3:17

SEVEN KEYS TO HAPPINESS

Ephesians 4:25-32

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

26  "In your anger do not sin" : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

27  and do not give the devil a foothold.

28  He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

29  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

30  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

32  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
